Characteristics/Adaptations
-
An emperor scorpion catches prey by using its large pincers to grab onto its victim. If the organism is too big, it strikes it with the stinger on the tip of its tail. The venom then enters the prey and kills it.
-
Because the eyesight of these scorpions is very poor, their other senses are well developed. Adaptations, such as the use of body hairs to detect their surroundings and prey, help them survive in their environment. The body hairs have the ability to detect both size and location of prey through vibrations in the ground and in the air.
-
Unlike many other organisms, scorpions must predigest their food before they consume it. After they kill their prey, they secrete a digestive enzyme that liquefies the body. They can then consume the liquid through their chelicerae.
