Characteristics/Adaptations
-
Depending on their gender, they will resemble either leaves or twigs. The females take on the role of a green leaf (as seen above). Males do a great job of impersonating a brown twig. Either way, this is a superb camouflaging technique that is used to escape detection of predators.
-
If a walking leaf is attacked, it will defend itself by kicking out with its sharp, spiny legs. In their thorax, they can also excrete a liquid that is corrosive to predators. This is useful because they are too slow to run away from a predator. Therefore, they simply shoot out a liquid at a predator.
-
Malaysian walking leafs have the ability to regenerate lost limbs. This means that they can regrow any body parts that happened to be removed.
-
Females have the ability to reproduce asexually. Therefore, if there aren’t males around, the females can still create offspring and survive in their environment.
