Characteristics/Adaptations
-
A puffer fish can inflate itself to over three times its natural size. This is an adaptation and characteristic that sends a message to potential predators to leave it alone. It is also a warning to not eat it, because it is poisonous. “Puffing up” is an intimidation technique.
-
A puffer fish produces a deadly poison, called tetrodotoxin, that can kill several people. This poison will kill the majority of predators that might swallow it. However, the poison is only released after the puffer fish is dead.
-
It has large powerful jaws to break hard shells that it eats.
-
This fish is highly maneuverable but travels at low speeds so it must have the ability to inflate itself as a defense mechanism.
