Characteristics/Adaptations
-
The owl butterfly has large spots on its wings that look strikingly similar to the eyes on an owl (as seen above). This adaptation scares off predators or tricks them into attacking the wings of the butterfly instead of the body.
-
The wings not only act as camouflage, but act as a way to warm their bodies. When they need to be warm, they will perch on trees and spread their wings in order to warm the blood that passes through them. If their wings get too cold, they will not be able to fly.
-
Because the owl butterfly doesn’t have nose, it must use its antennae in order to detect its environment.
-
When a butterfly lands on a flower, it will use its legs to taste the petal.
