Characteristics/Adaptations
  • An adaptation that the spotted hyena has developed is its powerful jaws. They have very large teeth that stop their teeth from wearing out too quickly. These teeth can slice hide and tendon while minimizing damage when they are crushing bones. Because they can easily cling to live prey, they hunt in packs.

  • Hyenas also have big jaw muscles that allow them to eat all parts of their prey, including bone. They developed this jaw strength to improve their ability to survive during times of famine.

  • Spotted Hyenas are nocturnal which have led to a range of vocalizations. They have over 20 different calls that allow them to protect their food/territory or to locate individuals/members for hunting.

  • Scent is important to Hyenas. When two hyenas meet, they sniff each other carefully. They also mark their territories with urine, feces, and other secretions.
